Shake, Rattle, and Roll

We have finished our rattles! Earlier last week, we sewed together two pieces of rawhide with sinew and stuffed our pouches with sand to form our rattles. Once our rattles were dry we painted them and filled them with beans, rocks, and rice to give them a unique 'rattle' sound.

Making Rattles

The talented students in Division 2 are making rattles. Our rattles are made out of hide and sinew. We had to soak the hide overnight to make it soft and flexible. Then, using a needle, we sewed the hide together with a long strand of sinew.

Once we had sewn the pieces of hide together firmly, we filled the hide with sand. The sand makes the hide bulge in the middle. When the hide dries, we will empty out the sand and our rattles will be hollow.

We hung our rattles up by the sinew so the stitches will tighten as they dry. Tomorrow, we will empty out the sand and choose objects to put in our rattle to make the sound!

Elder's Tea - Tuesday March 27th

Division 2 will be hosting Lytton Elementary School's monthly Elder's Tea on Tuesday, March 27th at 2:00pm. 

Please join us for coffee, tea, and snacks. Bring your drum, and join us in a drumming circle. 

If you've been reading our blog lately, you'll have seen that we have been practicing drumming with Harvey Dunstan every Friday. We are so excited to share our drumming with our Elders at the Elder's tea! Don't forget to bring your drum with you to the Tea so that you can join us in singing and drumming all our favourite songs.

This week, our class made paper drums to give to our Elders as an invitation to the Elder's Tea. Take a look at our beautiful artwork!

Our paper drums took a lot of work to make. We made the drum "skins" out of crumpled paper and painted them with tea bags! When the tea dried, it had stained our paper a light brown. The crinkles in the paper held on to more of the pigment of the tea, so that is what made the darker brown lines and spots. We made our drum frames with card stock and laced them with twine and raffia. When our drums were assembled, we painted on designs. We modelled our drum invitations after the drums we play with when we practice drumming with Harvey.

Mixing Tones

In Art last week, we learned how to mix tones of a colour by adding drops of a colour to white paint. When you mix one drop of coloured paint with white paint, you get a very pale tone. When you add a lot of drops of colour to white paint, you get a darker tone.

We chose our favourite colours and created 5 tones by mixing paint. Then, we used our tones to create art that featured just one colour. It was a fun experiment to see how much detail and interest we could create in a painting with only one colour.

Alexis and Trinity experimented with making shades of grey. They started with white paint and added drops of black paint. The less black paint they added, the lighter the shade of grey. Alexis' painting really shows off the changes in shades! She created a graduated colour pattern by painting stripes of grey that show a gradual change from dark, to medium, to light.
